An exploration in color and texture.

For me, art is experimentation and exploration. It is intuitive for me to find color combinations that resonate and evoke certain feelings. I want the viewer to feel something when they look at my art. I want each viewer to see something different and to find things they had not seen each time they view the piece. It makes the piece unpredictable, timeless and deep.

When working with clients - I often ask for 3-5 colors that they love and want to see in their space. I will ask for the size of the canvas that they envision in the space. I will ask to see the space, so I can get a feel for the personality of the environment. My work is guaranteed. For commissioned pieces, I will keep going back to the canvas until the piece is something that you love.

Florals

As a gardener, the possibility of creating floral paintings is infinite!

I can create a floral, but no doubt the God of the Universe has already designed something more incredible. I get my inspiration from all of the glorious and splendid creations in nature.

Whenever I travel, I am studying the local flora. My pieces reflect the beauty that I have enjoyed in my home state of Minnesota. You will see other pieces that are more indicative of the flora from other parts of the world where my travels have taken me to - namely, New Mexico, the Caribbean and Florida.

My pieces are usually mixed media. I enjoy creating a base for my paintings with lots of texture. After I am satisfied with the base – I experiment with mark making and using all kinds of different mediums – from acrylics and gouache, to chalks and oil pastels.

Abstracts

Abstract art is so much harder than it looks!

There are so many elements that need to be considered; Color palette, texture, composition, and depth.  How many times have you looked at a piece of art and said, “I could do that”!

The process of creating a piece of art often is a wrestling match with yourself:

  • Do the colors look good together?

  • Do I need more color?

  • How can I make this color stand out more?

  • Can I make this color fade into the background more?

  • Is my composition powerful?

  • Does this piece make the viewer “feel” something?

  • Is my abstract interesting to the point where my viewer will enjoy it and see something different each time they view it?

Sometimes the simplest abstracts, with the fewest colors are the hardest to do! Its strange but true. A good artist can make a huge statement with only a few brushstrokes.

Line Art

Line art is a new passion that I discovered. I was in a 100 day art challenge which pushed me to experiment with other supplies and in smaller spaces. For example, when I am traveling, and I don’t have a studio, I can always be working with a tablet of good paper – good art supplies are essential! I love to make my line art with micron pens and fill them in with watercolor, or chalks. All of these supplies are easy to pack and use when I am away from the studio.
